Los Cabos: The Perfect Place to Celebrate Valentine’s Day
Commemorated on February 14, Valentine's Day originated as a Christian feast day honoring an early martyr named Valentine. Over the centuries, Valentine’s Day has come to be recognized as a symbol of love and romance throughout the world. That includes Los Cabos, where Cupid’s arrows have been known to fly. Best of all, February 14 falls on a Friday this year. It’s one of the best nights of the week for couples to step out and be together.
From an exciting outdoor activity to an intimate romantic dinner, here are a few ways for couples to share their amar in Cabo.
1. Lovers Beach & Land’s End. The sultry air, the shining sun, the hypnotic sound of waves breaking on shore--beaches were made for romance. At Medano Beach, the Cabo San Lucas town beach lapped by calm waters, active couples can hire one of the outfitters along the strand to pursue a favorite water sport. Among the rentals available are kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Paddling a kayak or paddleboard to Lovers Beach, a sheltered hideaway situated at the base of towering rock formations near Land’s End, is a good core work-out and for couples in love, Lovers Beach is the place to be on Valentine’s Day. Less exertion, more romance? Expedition companies (such as Cabo Adventures) can take you to Lovers Beach to swim, snorkel or just relax. Not a water person? Cabo Adventures offers a 2.5-hour Cabo Sunset Cruise aboard a deluxe French sailboat or catamaran complete with appetizers, open bar, and a close-up view of El Arco, the iconic arch at Land’s End.
2. LaFrida. The perfect location for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner? The leading choice is LaFrida, the signature restaurant at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. The beautiful candlelit room, dedicated to famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, features reproductions of her paintings on the walls. This elegant salon, with a resident pianist on hand, serves classic yet inventive Mexican cuisine crafted by executive chef Anaisa Guevara, a rising culinary star. Dishes can be paired with a selection from the restaurant’s impressive cellar of award-winning wines. Gracious sommeliers are on hand to guide diners. Save room for dessert and flaming coffees made with tequila and other spirits. Bring your phone or camera to dinner: LaFrida’s accommodating staff is expert at capturing special moments for couples.
3. Hearts. The seat of all emotions (especially love), the heart is synonymous with Valentine’s Day. Pueblo Bonito Resorts’ gift shops carry exquisite glass hearts, hand-blown in an array of colors, including fire-engine red. Gift-wrapped with an intimate note, they’re an ideal gift. For eco-conscious couples, there’s a unique recycling initiative behind these creations. Pueblo Bonito’s hotels recycle bottles by the truckload. The nearby San Miguel Blown Glass Factory collects up to two tons of empties from the resorts each month. Each bottle is cleaned, crushed, and melted in special ovens. Glassblowers dip long hollow tubes into the molten glass and blow bubbles. Artisans then shape the melted glass into fish, vases--and most especially ornamental hearts.
4. Chocolate. Valentine’s Day is closely associated with chocolate, which originated in Mexico as far back as 1750 B.C. with the Olmecs, an ancient Mesoamerican people. Lovers with a sweet tooth can make a beeline for La Chocolateria, a gourmet outpost that artfully displays the finest-quality chocolates, truffles, and other confections at The Market at Quivira. Headed by renowned Mexico City chocolatier José Ramón Castillo, La Chocolateria’s offers exquisitely made, vibrantly colored artisanal treats in a variety of flavors. Combining 100% Mexican cacao derived principally from Tabasco and Chiapas, these delectable chocolates are edible art. One bite will confirm their superior quality. A perfect gift for that very special Valentine.
