Interview with Christian Rehmke, Director of Operations, Quivira Los Cabos
If anyone can speak with authority about what’s new within the Quivira resort community, it’s Christian Rehmke, who took the reins in June 2021 and oversees the operation of the development’s master plan.
“The most anticipated event for owners and residents will be the opening of the Quivira Beach Club next month” he enthused. Phase I of this premier oceanfront facility, which adjoins the thatched-roof golf clubhouse, will be “fully amenitized, equipped, with a pool, restaurant, bar and fitness center,” Rehmke said. “It’s something the owners have been eagerly awaiting.”
While the 20-mile corridor stretching between Can San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo has become increasingly congested and is nearing full capacity in terms of development, Rehmke believes Quivira Los Cabos has a distinct advantage.
“We’re on the Pacific side, sheltered in a mountain valley along a beautiful stretch of beach. It’s like a sanctuary,” he said. “Most recently I worked at Punta Mita,” the resort community on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta. “Punta Mita is the same size as Quivira, a self-contained development with its own hotels, communities, golf and other amenities.” But while Punta Mita is an hour’s drive from Puerto Vallarta, Quivira is less than 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas.
“Our other advantage,” Rehmke explained, “is that we’re convenient to a new interior toll road that leads directly to the airport and eliminates the need to travel through the downtown area or along the corridor highway. It makes the
drive shorter and more pleasant—and gives guests more time to enjoy breakfast prior to departure.”
Looking ahead, Rehmke highlighted three major developments for 2023-24:
1. The expected groundbreaking in spring 2023 on Quivira’s second Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course
2. The debut of The St. Regis Los Cabos at Quivira (resort and residences) in the second half of 2023
3. The opening of Alvar, Quivira’s new condo community, in late 2023 / early 2024
Rehmke believes the most important travel segment for Quivira Los Cabos is families. “We’re looking to develop additional family-oriented amenities,” he said. “At present, Q Life has been a key driver for families, with experiences tailored to all age groups, including Spanish lessons, cooking classes, yoga, paintball and now a food truck in Amakiri Botanical Garden.
“We’re also partnering with exclusive high-end brands to deliver more personalized service to our owners and residents,” he noted. A few examples:
Casa Madero, the renowned Mexican winery, is working with the community’s culinary outlets to create special tasting menus to pair with its vintages.
Aromalia, a fragrance company with a strong presence in Mexico City, is creating a special scent for Quivira. Buyers can also select or create a personalized Aromalia scent for their homes.
Diamonds International, a well-established jewelry outlet in Cabo San Lucas, showcases its products at owners’ cocktail parties, which will resume this fall.
Cabo Adventures, the destination’s finest outfitter, is in the process of creating exclusive experiences and adventures for Quivira residents.
As for travel trends, the rising tide has lifted all boats in Los Cabos, where tourism has grown by 16%, 1.5 times the overall pace of Mexico, which itself is booming. (In the first seven months of 2022, revenue for international tourism in Mexico increased 64.4% compared to the same period in 2021). In addition, Rehmke noted that Mexicans have begun to travel more extensively within their country, injecting billions of pesos into local economies.
If the future is bright in Los Cabos, it’s absolutely radiant at Quivira.
